Colorado 2012
0Well, this year, my ski trip was a success! I drove to Denver on December 28 and found a place to stay in Summit County that same day. I left Denver on Friday, stopping in Georgetown for a few hours for ice racing practice, arriving at my new home for the next 2 months in Silverthorne, CO. I got situated on Saturday, went ice racing on Sunday (and won), and started skiing on Monday. Here are some numbers for you:
- 597,571 – total vertical feet skied
- 41,456 – most vertical feet skied in one day
- 19,919 – average vertical
Planning an extended ski trip
0As you well know, my last few posts were about my trip to Colorado and subsequent accident. This will be an actual research post, but to give you a quick update, I’m doing much better. There was no disc, ligament, or other damage aside from the transverse process fractures, so I basically just had to let the fractures heal, then work on rebuilding my muscles. I did several weeks of physical therapy, and aside from the occasional mild soreness in the muscles near my lower left back, everything is back to normal.
So, on to the business at hand. In More >
Operation “Brokeback Mountain”
1So, in my last post, I mentioned that I was a bit unsure what my next steps would be. Initially, I thought I would at least see a doctor up in Colorado to see what they thought, but there are only a few in the area where I was at, and as such, it was a bit difficult to get an appointment with any of them. That, coupled with the fact that I was in such a beautiful place, but was unable to enjoy it, gave me a desire to return home, where I suspect it will be much easier More >
Skiing: the good, the bad and the ugly
0Since I posted about ice racing, which is one of the things I came here to do, I figured it’s about time to post about skiing, which is the other reason I’m here.
Coming here, I considered myself a lower-level intermediate skier. The last time I went skiing, I skied mostly blues, with the occasional easy black, meaning steep, but otherwise smooth and flat. I had previously tried moguls a few times, and always failed miserably. On my first visit to the mountain this trip, I basically picked up where I left off. I’ve found that skiing is kind of More >
Ice Racing 101
0Ice racing is awesome. Prior to trying it, I had seen some videos online, and it looked really fun, but really didn’t know what to expect. After all, prior to 5 days ago, I had never even been on winter tires. So, when I arrived in Georgetown early Sunday morning, and drove out onto the lake, I was pretty excited. However, before I could practice, I had to get a tech inspection, which basically amounts to a guy checking out your car, and determining what class you’ll be in based upon your car and your tires. I had read the More >
Rocky Mountain High
1So, I made it to Denver. Here are some thoughts/observations from the trip, in chronological order:
- Putting snow tires in your back seat for an extended period of time makes your vehicle’s interior smell like a tire shop.
- I always remember things that I forgot less than an hour into a trip. Luckily, this time, it wasn’t anything important.
- A car with a sport-tuned suspension and lack of cruise control isn’t a very good candidate for a road trip. However, the racing seats are surprisingly supportive, as their design basically forces you to sit with proper posture. Your butt
A world of scenic wonder awaits, in a land called Colorado*
0I know it’s been a while since I’ve posted. I was going to apologize, but then I realized that this is my blog, which I can use as frequently or infrequently as I’d like, so I’m not going to. Coincidentally, this particular entry will be quite different from my typical entries, as well. For those of you who don’t already know, I’m about to embark on a 6-week trip to Colorado. I was already planning to take a good number of pictures, which I’ll probably share on Facebook, but I also wanted a place to record my adventures in writing, so More >
Reasonably priced alarm system monitoring
0A friend of mine recently mentioned that he was looking into getting a monitored security system installed and asked what I recommended. It’s been a couple years since I did all of the research, but I ended up going with [Smith Thompson Security]. There are many companies who provide this type of service. Some are very well known (Brinks, ADT), and others, like Smith Thompson, are smaller, regional companies.
So, why did I choose Smith Thompson? Well, when you’re looking at a number of companies who provide the same service, assuming the quality of service and equipment is equal, it More >
Batteries not included.
0So it’s been over a month since I last posted. I never really intended post here on a regular basis because I had just planned to post whenever I had some good information to disseminate. However, I must admit that I’ve missed posting a bit. A while back, a friend of mine sent me a message asking me about rechargeable batteries. He had done a bit of research himself, but wanted to know if I had any further insight. The short answer is not really, but I figured I’d go ahead and post anyways, as others may benefit from the More >
How to choose the best home/auto insurance company…
0Choosing an insurance company can be difficult. Going in, if you don’t do any research, all you have to go by is the rate you’re quoted for a given coverage, and perhaps how friendly the agent that you spoke to was, or how easy their website was to use. Those things are great, but the true test of an insurance company comes when it’s time for them to pay out. Unfortunately, that’s generally not the time when you’re in the mood to put your insurance company to the test, particularly if you’ve inadvertently chosen poorly. Fortunately, there are resources available to help More >
